trash seeds

Zero waste guy

Yesterday I was lucky enough to meet up with Jonathan Levy, also known on Instagram as “Zero waste guy”.

A fellow marathon runner and sustainability warrior, Jonathan strives to reduce his impact on this planet by raising awareness about the amount of disposables society uses on a daily basis, consulting and blogging about his efforts to live with minimal dependence on plastic packaging, utensils, clothing and “stuff”.

Catching up over almond milk lattes, I asked him some burning questions I had about his lifestyle, plus heard about his new research discoveries on the topic. Inspired a couple of years ago, when working in one of Target’s warehouses, it kept baffling him to see all this disposable ‘stuff’ (be it cutlery, nappies, straws, cups, anything single use) come down the conveyor belt, destined for inevitable landfill. Being aware of how many resources had gone into producing those products knowing they were going to be used just once (or very few times) before disposal, plus having seen the scale of our landfill operations, he became really conscious of the general unsustainable nature of our society.

With this, and the worsening Californian drought top of mind, Jonathan decided to start his “zero waste guy” blog/Instagram, which is now becoming super popular!

Like me, the top things he recommends to people who wish to start reducing their dependence on disposables are refusing single use coffee cups, and avoiding plastic straws like the plague.

He carries a keepcup and a steel straw in his bag at all times, which is very easy to do, greatly reducing his contribution to the apparent 4.6lb of trash produced per American per day.

Another thing he recommends to people is to visit a landfill and/or recycling facility, to see first hand how effective and sustainable these really are.

After our coffee, Jonathan wanted to take me to see a classic American supermarket called Trader Joe’s, where “literally everything is in plastic”. It’s super hard to avoid plastic 100%, as even if you eat in a restaurant, they are using plastic packaged products to prepare your meal, so by “zero waste” Jonathan means he is simply living as minimalistic and waste-free as he can. He makes his own almond milk, takes his own containers to farmers markets to eliminate use of plastic bags, but admits things like fruit stickers, un-requested straws at bars, free gifts etc. It was so great to have a chat about how to change the world in this area.

I believe it’s just the baby steps by many that will begin to make the biggest difference, as if people feel an action is easy, beneficial and cheap to do, they’ll generally do it.

Thanks Zero waste guy for sharing your seeds of sustainability with me, keep up the awesome work in LA.
