Basic / Breeders Info

Heisenberg Kush is a mostly sativa variety from Alphakronik and can be cultivated indoors (where the plants will need a flowering time of ±46 days ) and outdoors . Alphakroniks Heisenberg Kush is/was never available as feminized seeds.

Alphakroniks Heisenberg Kush Description

Heisenberg Kush is the second offering in AG Seeds “Great Minds” series, named after fames physicist, Werner Heisenberg. Called the “Father of Quantum Mechanics”, Alphakronik Seeds felt that this SC Blue Dream hybrid fit perfectly with the ideals of the man who also made important contribution to the theories of the hydrodynamics of turbulent flows, the atomic nucleus, ferromagnetism, cosmic rays, and subatomic particles.

The result of bringing together one of the best yielding medical cannabis plants and their Sin City Kush was nothing short of spectacular. Producing heavy and dense yields of purpling and blue-hued flowering sativa dominant plants that still holds great structure and tons of THC filled trichomes. This plant is a great extract making hybrid, and can produce exact yields nearing 16% when grown properly. Of the phenotypes they found, the flavours ranged from fermenting grapes and earthy undertones to sandalwood with a strawberry finish.

Patient testing has shown Heisenberg Kush to perform well in aiding the effects of generalized pain, loss of appetite, nausea, sleeplessness, arthritis, muscle spasms, chronic fatigue and Grave’s Disease.

Heisenberg Kush likes to stretch is root zone during the first days in flower, so an extra gallon or so of soil when moving to flower is recommended. Extremely strong branching makes it good for tying down, rather than bending or breaking stalks to supercrop. Topping the plant in flower is highly recommended as well.

Lineage: SC Blue Dream x Sin City Kush
Indica/Sativa %: 25/75
Flowering time: 6-7 Weeks

Heisenberg Kush Awards

Alphakroniks Heisenberg Kush is a cupwinning variety and won the 4th Place at the The Karma Cup 2016 in the category Bio, submitted by Unknown Grower!

About this Sativa Strain

Heisenberg Kush is a sativa cannabis strain that produces buds that are shaped like spades, being dense and bright green in color having deep amber pistils. Its scent and taste are of diesel and pine.

Heiseberg Kush’s parents are a cross between the hybrid SC Blue Dream and indica Sin City Kush. It first blossomed under the care of Alphakronik Genes Seeds in part of their Great Minds genetics series.

THC levels average between 18-23%. Its high is known to be calming, elevating mood and melting the stresses of the day away. Upon consuming, one will feel an immediate head rush as euphoria covers the mind. Motivation suddenly increases, rendering thoughts towards productive endeavors. Focus improves and any task focused on will be completed with ease. Hunger may arise, so have snacks at their ready.

Negative side-effects are rare with Heisenberg Kush except for dry eyes and mouth, but note that many strains may cause paranoia or anxiety when consuming above tolerance levels.

It takes six to seven weeks for Heisenberg Kush to fully flower for reaping.

The Best Seed Banks To Order From Online…that also ship to USA & Canada

Some good… some very, very bad.

Here are my top 10 best seed banks to order from which also ship to the USA and Canada.

Buying cannabis seeds online can be frustrating to say the least…

Poor quality seeds, missing packages and unresponsive customer service is far too common.

Just check out any grower forum and you’ll see what I mean.

Some seed banks seem as though they just don’t care!

I’ve rated each seed bank out of 10 based on several key criteria (explained below ) and included a seed bank FAQs section at the end to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about purchasing seeds online.

What to look for in a good seed bank…

When looking for a good seed bank, there are several key criteria that you should to look out for.

IMPORTANT: My top 3 tips when choosing a seed bank and buying seeds online

I’ve purchase A LOT of seeds online and have gone through many of the frustrations most growers have (missing seeds, crap customer service, non germinating seeds)

Here are my top tips to having a stress free experience buying from an online seed bank:

1. Only ever buy feminized seeds. I can’t stress this enough. They might be a little more expensive than normal seeds but they’re worth it because you get less duds and therefore won’t spend as much time germinating or waiting for new seeds to be delivered.

2. Shipping times seem to be the number one gripe among growers buying seeds online. That’s because most of the good seed banks are in the EU and most of the growers are in the US or Canada. If shipping speed is important to you and you live in the USA, buy from a Canadian seed bank, not one in Europe. You might not use the best seed bank, but you will get your seeds faster.

3. I always like to choose a seed bank that has solid customer service. ALL seed banks will sometimes send seeds that don’t germinate, ALL seed banks will sometimes have slightly delayed shipping. When these things inevitably happen, it’s nice to know the customer service is there to take care of you.

4. Whatever Seedbank you choose, try to order a relatively small amount of seeds first to test out how the seedbank performs in terms of shipping and germination rates.

Ok, with that said, here are my detailed reviews of the top 10 seed banks:

Best Seed Banks To Order from Online

#1 – Seedsman

Seedsman is my number one pick when it comes to online seed banks, and the best EU seed bank by far.

This hugely popular seed bank offers one of the biggest selections of strains online (over 4,000! ) and their seeds have some of the lowest prices I could find online.

To add to their low prices, they also have loads of amazing promotions that can dramatically reduce the cost of your order.

The only negative about Seedsman is that their customer service could be a little better. Customer support is something that large businesses always seem to struggle with. When I called their phone number I got an automated service (Argh…) However, they replied to my email within 24 hours so they still manage to take top spot, just.

If you’re looking for high quality customer service and don’t mind paying a little more for it, then my second pick might be a better option for you.

#2 – I Love Growing Marijuana (ILGM)

I Love Growing Marijuana is run by Robert Bergman, a veteran grower with over 25 years of growing experience.

These guys might not have the largest collection ( around 80 different strains) but they do have some very high quality strains and awesome customer service.

Shipping is free for US, Canadian and European orders and delivered in just 10 to 15 days on average.

They guarantee delivery, and will re-ship your seeds if your order doesn’t arrive or gets seized.

In the event that your seeds do not germinate, they will be happy to replace them for free – nice!

ILGM’s website is super easy to use and can be viewed in English, Spanish, French or Dutch. Every strain on their site has lots of customer reviews and well laid out info about genetics.

They also have an active forum with helpful topics for beginners.

#3 – Growers Choice Seeds

Growers Choice Seeds comes highly rated from several popular online forums and offers a variety of seeds suitable for every cannabis consumer.

One thing I appreciate about Growers Choice Seeds is their commitment to their products. According to their site, if 90 percent of your seeds do not germinate, they will send a replacement order.

Based on reviews from popular cannabis forums, they back this guarantee and are more than willing to work with you should you be unsatisfied with your order.

All orders are packaged to be as discreet as possible. Most of the time seeds are left in their original, air-tight packaging. However, in some cases seeds are removed from their packaging to ensure a safe and secure delivery. Additionally, orders outside the U.S. can receive special “stealth packaging” at no extra charge.

Depending on where you’re shipping your package, you can expect to receive your goodies within 7-25 business days. Most customers report being very satisfied with the shipping speed of their order.

Additionally, every order is given a tracking number so you can keep a close eye on your order from the moment it leaves the warehouse until it reaches your doorstep.

#4 – MSNL Seeds

MSNL is another well-established Seedbank that has been around since 1999.

Their refined strains are extremely high quality and raved about in the cannabis community.

They also offer a great selection of low cost value packs which are perfect for trying different seeds without spending lots of money.

In general, they tend to be a little more expensive than seedsman and have a smaller selection of strains. They also do not accept Bitcoin.

Check out my full review of MSNL here.

#5- Sensi Seeds

Sensi Seeds is one of the biggest names in the cannabis seed industry. They have won numerous Cannabis Cup awards and are a renowned brand worldwide.

Though their prices are a bit higher than other seed banks, you know you are getting some of the best genetics in the world when purchasing from Sensi Seeds.

Most reviews for Sensi Seeds are positive, though some report being unsatisfied with the quality of their seeds or not receiving their order.

Customer service seems a bit wishy-washy, though it does appear typically they try their best to resolve any issue as quickly as possible.

Every order is packaged in a discreet, unmarked envelope. There are no logos or advertising present on the packaging, making it virtually impossible to tell what is inside.

If you are lucky enough to live within the shipping range for Sensi Seeds, you can expect to receive your order within 2-10 business days from the date your payment is processed, depending on which shipping option you chose.

Check out my full review of Sensi Seeds here.

#6 – Crop King Seeds

Crop King Seeds has been in the game for almost 15 years, steadily climbing their way to the top.

Nowadays, they have made quite a name for themselves and you can find the “King” in a multitude of physical and online storefronts.

While offering a slightly smaller seed collection in comparison with other top seed banks, Crop King Seeds does have an advantage in that they only offer their own personally cultivated strains.

Crop King Seeds have just launched a new website and it is really well laid out and you can use various filters to easily search for a strain perfect for you. Plus, they offer a section devoted to teaching customers how to successfully germinate their new seeds.

According to reviews on popular online forums, customers either love the “King” or hate him. From what I’ve read, customer service seems a bit quick to point fingers at the customer rather than own up to any mistake on their end. However, for every negative review there are three that swear by this company for all of their cannabis seed needs.

All orders are shipped in special packaging designed to maintain freshness and be as discreet as possible. Only orders shipped within Canada will be packaged in authentic Crop King Seeds packaging. Seeds shipped to all other countries will come packaged in various other items, to maintain privacy.

Shipping speeds range from 2-7 business days for orders shipped within Canada, and up to two weeks for international orders.

Check out my full review of Crop King Seeds here.

#7 – Gorilla Seed Bank

Though relatively new to the game, the founders of Gorilla Seed Bank have more than 40 years of combined experience in the cannabis industry.

While they don’t have the biggest seed selection out there, Gorilla does offer seeds from some of the most reputable brands.

They also offer competitively low prices on nearly all of their products, something I always take into consideration when purchasing.

The main issue customers report have been small errors with processing payments or seed viability. However, it’s clear that customer service is the number one priority for this company, as nearly all reviews on popular online forums also report any issues being resolved promptly and adequately.

Depending on where the order is being sent, shipping times can vary from 1-24 business days. Most orders shipped within the UK will be received within 7 business days.

TIP: There are always a wide variety of seed promotions going on and freebie offers. The only downside is the minimum purchase amount is a bit higher than other sites I’ve browsed. I recommend checking the promotions page and considering making one or two bigger purchases, rather than multiple smaller ones, in order to take advantage of these awesome deals

#8 – Amsterdam Marijuana Seeds (AMS)

Amsterdam Marijuana Seeds has been in the cannabis game for 25 years with no sign of slowing down.

Their time in the industry definitely shows in their intuitive and user-friendly website.

Subscribe and you’ll get a free growing guide.

With the Netherland’s top breeders, you can expect fantastic seed and strain quality.

Their packaging is crush-proof and made to look like regular mail. You may not even recognize your package.

Conversely, being shipped straight from Amsterdam will mean relatively higher prices.

Fortunately, the shipping price may be offset by both their affordable seed options and combo packages.

Check out my full review of Amsterdam Marijuana Seeds here.

#9 – True North Seed Bank – Not recommended anymore

True North Seed Bank is a fairly new seed supplier based in Toronto, Canada.

They have a large selection of strains and some very nice discounts and promotions.

If you’re a US or Canadian customer, shipping is very fast with orders arriving in an average of 5-14 days.

Although I had no major issues with my order (8/10 feminized seeds germinated) customer feedback on TNSB seems to be quite polarised, and it seems to me that their slightly subpar customer service is the reason for this negative feedback. All seed banks have issues with seeds and shipping, but it’s how you deal with those issues that sets some seed banks apart.

#10 – Attitude Seed Bank

Attitude is a very popular seed bank based out of the UK.

They reportedly have some of the best genetics worldwide and offer thousands of seeds from more than 200 brands.

Most reviews from popular online forums are positive, though some mention orders being seized by customs.

Most of these customers however, did not pay for discreet shipping, which is something I always suggest.

Another common issue customers report is the quality of seeds can vary greatly.

Because Attitude sells a variety of seeds from numerous brands, it makes sense the lesser known brands may have lower quality products. This is why I always recommend buying seeds from already established and reputable brands.

One thing I always appreciate is saving a little extra money.

Attitude always has a wide variety of promotions running so be sure to take a look before placing your order to ensure you get your money’s worth!

Shipping speeds vary based on where the package is being sent.

International orders are typically received between 7 to 10 business days, though can take up to 21 business days.

TIP: Every order over £40 comes with various “freebies” (which is great to up the “discreet factor” of your package)

Seedbank FAQ’s

What payment methods can I use?

Most good seed banks offer a number of different ways to pay for your seeds:

Credit/Debit Cards

Most seed banks take payment with debit or credit cards without any problem.

However, placing an order with standard bank cards can sometimes have issues if don’t usually order items from abroad using that card.

This might make other payment methods more appealing.

Personally, I use a credit card, which offers better protection than a stand card when buying online.

I’ve never had an issue ordering seeds online with my credit card.

Bitcoin

Bitcoin is anonymous, safe and secure.

It’s therefore perfect for this type of transaction and the method of payment that most seed banks prefer.

Many seed banks offer incentives to purchase your seeds with Bitcoin.

Paying with cash means that there will be no record of the transaction on your bank account.

However, most seedbanks will appear very discretely on your bank statement anyway, and sending cash in the post is risky.

Paypal

It’s very rare for a seed company to offer a Paypal as a payment option.

This is because Paypal strictly prohibits cannabis seed sales (get with the times PayPal! )

Online Seed banks get blocked from accepting payments once Paypal discovers what they are selling.

Bank transfer/wire

A standard direct transfer from your bank account to the seed banks account.

A bank transfer usually avoids any fuss with your credit card or bank card being blocked for suspicious activity.

It’s fast and secure and many Seed Banks recommend that you use this method

Cheques

Anoutdated method of payment, but many seedbanks offer this option.

It’s fairly secure but takes a long time to process.

There’s definitely better ways to pay.

What is the best method of payment?

The absolute best method of payment to use with a seed bank is probably Bitcoin.

It only takes a few minutes to set up and means that all of your transactions are 100% anonymous, safe and secure.

Many seedbanks offer big discounts for payments made with bitcoin, so this is definitely something you should consider.

If like me you don’t fancy setting up Bitcoin, then use a standard credit card is the next best option.

Why are there no good US Seedbanks?

The current situation in the US is that although it’s usually safe to buy /order seeds online, it’s very risky for the seed bank sell them or send them from one state to another due to the different laws in each state.

This is the reason why it’s hard to find a long-established seed bank in the country.

Hopefully this will change in the near future.

All of the seed banks listed in this article will ship to the USA and Canada

What will happen if customs open my package?

Current customs laws in America indicates that if your seed package from abroad does get caught in the mail, you will not be put on any “list”.

Instead, the U.S. customs agents will simply toss the seeds and send you what’s left of the package.

They also send an official letter letting you know that your seeds were confiscated.

If this happens to you, simply contact the seed bank with evidence and they will gladly give you a replacement package.

Important disclaimer: Please note that this is not intended as legal advice

Do I need an account to purchase seeds?

No, most seed banks will allow you to complete checkout as a guest without having to register an account with them.

It’s my first grow, which strain should I choose?

Firstly, congratulations on deciding to grow – you’re going to love it!

For your first grow, I would recommend choosing a strain that’s known for it’s “easy to grow” characteristics.

Northern lights is a very popular strain that is exceptionally resilient to many common issues that affect cannabis plants while growing.

They also grow short and have a low odor, which can be beneficial for a number of reasons.

Final Thoughts

Purchasing cannabis seeds online can seem a little daunting at first.

However, buying from a well-respected and reliable seed bank should ease any fears that you have.

The seed banks listed in this article will take good care of you and ensure that you receive your seeds and that you are 100% happy.

Let me know what your favorite seed bank is in the comments below or if you’ve had any bad experiences!

I wouldn’t touch True North. Add on costs for card processing, more money to send by stealth, more money for guaranteed delivery which means you can get the same strains cheaper every where else. To top it off their customer service is shocking. Rarely respond to e-mails and even had one of their team tell me that they work remotely from them and they struggle to get answers from the management too.

Hey James! Thanks for the feedback on True North. When I contacted True North they replied pretty quickly, but maybe they aren’t very consistent. I have to admit, my current go-to seed banks at the moment are ILGM and Seedsman!

I Agree the Seedsman does have a good customer service which is Key from buying from any seed bank that goes for all businesses big and small good customer service always should come first before anything else, but it is also very easy to call the Seedsman from the states. So I see The Vault didn’t make your list, probably because they only started taking credit cards again after they moved to Spain but their main office is in the UK they also have comprehensive Grows about 4-5 times a year if you’re a member of Grasscity, RIU or 420magazine for some growers who may not have money to purchase seeds for whatever the situation maybe, but they will send you a pack of 5 autos and a T-shirt and seeds are usually from a Top Breeder like Dutch Passions which is side by side almost with Sensi Seeds which aren’t as Good as they once where, but still one of the Best for having Good genetics. Also I see who didn’t make the list is Nirvana with one of there flag ship strains Aurora indicia F1’s. I don’t Grow feminized seeds and a lot of old skool growers and master growers you will never grow femmed strains for their lack of stability, but I have grown in the past femmed strains with always Good results I just think Regs is where’s it’s at! Also Bodhi seeds or Great Lake genetics who have by far has the most Keepers and some of the best genetics out of any seed bank Imo! But for newer growers the Seedsman is probably the Best to deal with because of there Good freebies but The Vault seed bank has the most breeders out of any Bank out there and they also don’t Breed but Have a Lotta 100% free promotions and like mentioned sign up on Grasscity if you want free seeds when they do their comprehensive grows! Good article and agree on 95% of what you said.

Hey James, I tried to connect to True North as well as ILGM & my computer stopped me because they both had Malware attached. So everyone be careful. I can’t believe since Canada is legal that the price of seeds has sky rocked! Just plain crazy!

Hey ? Oh that’s very strange. I just checked the links and they seem to be working OK for me with no warnings. Is this happening for anyone else? There may be a short term increase in Canadian seed prices but with more and more states and countries legalising it should lead to more competition between the seed bank, which will mean lower prices in the long run!

True North Seed Bank Is ripping customers off and getting them red flagged at customs. I tried to get this resolved and have been ignored by TNSB Management. I’ve been sending this message around that TNSB ignores!

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with True North Seed Bank David ? Seed banks can be really hit and miss. For some people they receive their seeds no problem and others encounter big delays. I would always recommending ordering a small quantity of seeds from the seed banks on this list to see which ones work best for you. I’m a big fan of Seedsmand and ILGM. Seedsman has a better selection but ILGM has better customer support.

True North is nothing short of being a rip-off. Never have I had such problems with obtaining seeds. Do yourselves a favour and stay away from this dispensary.
I just ordered from Dr.Seeds where prices are far less. Shipping time and quality will follow.
Once again, stay far away from True North.

hello what about Dinafem seed Bank the side looks good the reviews are also postive and they even give sometimes somethig away ))

yes stay away from True North. i recently made an order for bubba kush humboldt.these come in a wooden block and the seeds are in a tube with a spot of glue on the side. my block was empty. customer serice made it good the same day i called but i will not take a chance with them again.

ABOUT BON APPÉTIT
Cook with confidence using Bon Appetit’s kitchen tips, recipes, videos, and restaurant guides. Stay current on the latest food trends, dining destinations, and hosting ideas.

Mature cannabis seeds are dark brown, sometimes with swirly patterns or stripes. Discard immature pale or greenish-colored seeds. I’ve never started seeds in soil, preferring the Japanese method of “proving” seeds first; there’s no sense planting dud seeds. I germinated my seeds in a moistened, loosely rolled up paper towel on a plate in indirect light on the kitchen counter where I could keep an eye on progress. Keep the paper towel moist, but not lying in a puddle of water or the seeds will rot.

How to Grow Your Own Cannabis Plants From Seeds

Takeaway: Back in the last millennium, before cloning swept the country like the hula hoop, people actually grew cannabis plants from seed. Primitive, huh? But where there’s a will, they’ll surely find a way. While that’s all changed now (hello, cloning!) you can only clone so many times before you have to buy more plants or get back to basics with seeds.

Growing from seed is all about the quality of your seeds. Plants will never be better than the seeds they grew from. Back in the day, there weren’t any seed shops, so seeds were saved from exceptional buds, but it was all a crapshoot with a lot of trial and error. Luckily, now we know better.

Starting from seed isn’t difficult and you don’t need to be an experienced gardener, but the process is a journey in stages, not a direct flight. Cannabis plants are perfect for growing from seed because they have a short life cycle. That being said, be prepared to check your plants every day for moisture, insects, diseases, nutrient deficiencies and light. If you can’t make the time and work commitment, perhaps you should forget the idea. Here’s my list of what I used for my first grow. Nothing high-tech—my grow room was a walk-in closet with louvered doors and a clothes bar to hang my lights.

  • A four-foot table or two sawhorses with plywood on top
  • A piece of thick plastic or a waterproof tablecloth for spill protection
  • Potting soil for seedlings
  • Clean sand
  • Seeds (of desired strain if purchasing)
  • Five-gallon pail for mixing soil
  • A four-foot shop light with chains and S hooks
  • One full-spectrum red fluorescent grow light
  • One regular white fluorescent tube bulb
  • Light timer
  • Five-ounce opaque drink cups
  • Eight-ounce drink cups
  • pH kit
  • Plant flats or trays
  • Plastic kitchen wrap

Best Lighting for Cannabis Seedlings

If you’re on a budget, fluorescents offer the biggest bang for your buck when getting light to you cannabis seedlings. Don’t forget to factor in the cost of electricity and bulb replacement. To make sure all my plants got an equal amount of light, I turned the trays 180 degrees every day. I especially liked the ease of raising the shop light one link at a time as the plants grew. You can maximize your light by using a room with white walls or surrounding your grow table with movable reflecting foil-covered cardboard or hanging sheets of Mylar—mirrors don’t work well for reflecting light.

Germinating Cannabis

Mature cannabis seeds are dark brown, sometimes with swirly patterns or stripes. Discard immature pale or greenish-colored seeds. I’ve never started seeds in soil, preferring the Japanese method of “proving” seeds first; there’s no sense planting dud seeds. I germinated my seeds in a moistened, loosely rolled up paper towel on a plate in indirect light on the kitchen counter where I could keep an eye on progress. Keep the paper towel moist, but not lying in a puddle of water or the seeds will rot.

Some seeds germinate in a couple of days, while some take up to a week, depending on their temperature. It’s helpful to know that the seeds will produce male and female plants. Back in the Dark Ages, I always started 16 cups of seeds in hope of ending up with four females. That’s no longer a problem if you can buy feminized seeds, which are guaranteed to be females. I planted two sprouted seeds about one inch apart per cup because frequently one seedling will be bigger and stronger than the other. Go with the bigger one and pinch off the smaller one at the soil level.

The beauty of starting seedlings in the opaque cups is that you can see the root growth. Poke some drainage holes around the cup bases. It’s quicker to do the drain holes with the cups in a stack. As you finish each cup, slip it in the other end of the stack or you’ll waste crumpled up cups. Mix the potting soil with enough sand to give the fluffy soil more body. Add water gradually, mixing well to moisten.

Fill the cups with the soil mix and tap each cup a couple of times on the table to eliminate air pockets. Add more soil if needed, tap it down again to leave a half-inch space between the top of the soil and the rim of the cup. Repeat until all the cups are filled. Set up your grow table and lights. Ready? The table is all set. The lights are on. The cups are shoulder to shoulder in rows, waiting to fulfill their roles.

Transplanting Cannabis Seedlings

My tools of choice for planting were a small wooden matchstick and a wooden toothpick. I made two small holes with the clean end of the match about one quarter inch deep and a half inch apart and not too close to the side of the cup. I picked out two sprouted seeds at a time from the paper towel, careful not to touch the sprout, and dropped them into the match holes and used the tip of a toothpick to scuff soil into the holes, then lightly tamped the spots with one finger. Keep the remaining sprouted seeds covered so they don’t dry out. Repeat until all the cups are planted.

Put as many cups that fit into shallow flats or trays and then drape a long piece of kitchen plastic wrap over everything, tucking the ends under the trays to create a mini greenhouse. When this step is finished, the plants get to sunbathe under the lights for the next six weeks or so of the seedling phase.

In a few days, two primary leaves will appear and you can do your happy dance. Soon the next pair of leaves will appear and the first ones will drop off. If condensation forms under the plastic wrap, uncover the seedlings to release the excess moisture and then replace with fresh wrap. During the seedling phase, keep the soil moist but not wet and only water from the bottom from so the roots stretch down long and strong.

Water with a spray bottle until the first leaves appear, and then water from the bottom; the soil around the stem needs to stay dry to avoid stem rot. Fill pitchers or buckets with tap water and let sit uncovered until room temperature and the chlorine has evaporated into the air. Hard water is fine, but don’t use artificially softened water because it contains too much salt and other harmful additives.

I’m an organic gardener. While I don’t object to a little bloom booster to convince some reluctant annuals to step it up, I want everything that goes in my body to be as natural as possible. Plants need nitrogen to grow. When I had access to a mountain of free rotted horse manure, I fertilized with manure tea.

Throw a shovelful of manure in a bucket, fill with water, let it sit a couple of days and water with the tea. It worked fine for me. There are “hot” manures and “cold” manures. Hot manures have the highest nitrogen, but have to be aged. Cold cow manure has lower nitrogen but can be used hot out of the barn. Rabbit manure is cold, but some growers call it nitrogen on steroids. If slogging around in barnyards doesn’t appeal to you, you could use fish or seaweed emulsions or any of the other excellent natural fertilizers available at your local hydroponics supplier.

Check your soil pH regularly. Plants grown in soil like a pH about 7. If your soil drops below 6, add a light sprinkling of ground limestone before watering. If the soil is above 8—too alkaline—sprinkle around a concoction of cottonseed meal, lemon peels and ground coffee.

For repotting, discontinue the plastic wrap when the third set of leaves appear. When you see that the roots have reached the bottom of the cups, it’s time to repot the little darlings into the eight-ounce cups. In my experience, the plants do better stepping up to the bigger cup instead of going directly into three-quart pots. Repotting can be tricky, so take your time here. The plants shock easily with too much jostling or rough handling. Get the larger cups ready, poke the drain holes and fill with enough soil mix so the seedlings will be at the same depth as in the first cups. Before removing from the smaller cups, lightly water them so everything stays together.

Tip the cup upside down in your open hand with the seedling stem between your fingers. Gently squeeze the sides of the cup with your other hand and the seedling will drop out in one piece. Don’t pull it out by the stem! Place the seedling in its new home, filling around it with more soil, and make sure it isn’t deeper or shallower than in the smaller cup. This is important. Compress the soil lightly for any air pockets.

Entering the Vegetative Stage

During the vegetative phase, leave the lights on 24/7 and as close to the leaves as possible without touching. If the lights are too high, the stems will grow weak and spindly. You want the plants to remain compact. When your plants really take off, they may grow an inch a day. Keep a sharp eye on the distance between the tops of the plants and the lights. Fluorescents are cool and won’t burn the leaves, but keep adjusting your lights upwards to stay ahead of the growth.

Rotate your plants so they all get enough light. When plants are starting to bud, rough handling or a sudden change in temperature or light will drive them into shock. When you see your plants are beginning to outgrow the cups, it’s time to pot up again, this time to three-quart containers commonly found at nurseries. Always wash used pots in hot soapy water before reusing.

Sexing

Toward the end of the vegetative and budding phase, you’ll be able to sex your plants. Males have two pollen-filled sacs that are easy to see and females have a pair of white V-shaped hairs. One male plant is enough to pollinate all your females so they produce seeds. I didn’t grow for seeds, so I quickly yanked all the male plants. Male plants are low in THC, are harsh-tasting and give many people a massive headache. Unpollinated females produce more flowers, buds and THC.

For even more plants, remove the unproductive lower stems and leaves on your plants, and then make two or three shallow downward slices on the main stem with a clean blade and insert a graft slip dipped in root stimulant in each cut. Put a small piece of tape around the cuts. The grafts can be other varieties, not just the same as the host plant. Soon you’ll have new growth from all your grafts, giving you maximum yields.
