Our farm is Green Source Gardens, we focus on regenerative practices that specialize in partnering with our Southern Oregon climate. Feminized seeds are seeds that are bred with pollen from a true genetic female plant that is forced into hermaphroditic expression (produces male and female flower parts on the same plant) through chemical application or environmental stress. I won’t go into the chemical process because I personally have no experience with it, and find it unnecessary due to the fact you can achieve just as reliable results using environmental stress. To create feminized seed using environmental stress you can utilize light deprivation environments. Many growers who choose to light deprive their plants for an early harvest can attest to unexpected herming problems due to unknown light leaks and/or inconsistent timing getting the plants covered and uncovered. This is a perfect scenario to produce true feminized seeds. Understanding how to stress the plants, a grower can plan for light leaks or inconsistent timing until hermaphroditing occurs, then finish flowering and cure the seeds that were creating. The result is seed that is almost guaranteed to be all female plants.

GSG on Regular and Feminized Seeds

Regular seeds are ideal seeds for breeding, because they produce male and female plants. Feminized seeds are not ideal for breeding purposes because they should in theory produce only female plants. Feminized seeds are very useful when you only want to grow to produce flowers and not seeds. When utilizing feminized seeds, one needs to be aware of the problems that can be created due to the different ways they are produced.

When creating or acquiring feminized seeds you want to be very careful that the seeds came from a true female plant that was stressed into hermaphrodite expression and NOT and actual genetic hermaphrodite plant. A genetic hermaphrodite plant will produce male and female flower on the same plant without any environmental stress. These seeds are no good because their offspring will also in turn be hermaphrodites, where as a true feminized seed will not.

Feminized is the way to go if you want an easy crop that eliminates the need to separate the males and female plants. For anyone who is interested in breeding, I would only recommend regular seeds. That said, it is important to know where your seed comes from or you may end up with a yard full of herms. Good Luck!
