Calm aggression in cats with CBD
CBD for cats. Aggression is the second-most common feline behaviour problem. Although cat bites and scratches are not as serious as dog attacks, aggression in cats can still make life difficult for owners – especially when receiving visitors. According to the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) cat aggression can be a dangerous problem, and should be treated by a professional.
Luckily for pet owners, cat concerns of aggression, destructive scratching, litter box problems, excessive meowing, overgrooming (psychogenic alopecia) and more can often be traced back to a root cause: stress and anxiety. See our guide to CBD for pets here.
Sometimes aggression in cats has an underlying health problem like thyroid abnormality or sensory disorders, but more often than not taking away a cat’s anxiety can make the situation improve for everyone involved.
Here’s a look at what pet owners in the largest known survey on CBD usage in cats had to say about CBD oil for pets.
91% of pet owners say CBD has led to improvements
Scientific studies on CBD for cats are few and far between. The main research paper was only published in December 2021, and only looked for adverse effects of CBD usage in cats. Among the 20 healthy adult cats used in the study CBD was found to have no adverse effects – however administering THC along with CBD led to issues of lethargy and hypothermia as well as problems with coordination and muscle control.
One large-scale survey of 1448 respondents carried out by Leafreport however sheds some fascinating light on how pet owners are using CBD for cats and dogs. Here’s a summary of the findings:
- 50% of respondents reported having used CBD for their cats or dogs.
- 44% gave CBD to help ease anxiety or stress, 21% for pain, 15% for general health, 13% as an anti-inflammatory and 5% for a disease.
- 24% of respondents gave CBD on a regular basis – nearly one in four owners.
- 38% of respondents said their vet had recommended CBD for their cat or dog.
- 91% of respondents said CBD led to improvements, with 42% noticing a ‘moderate improvement’ and 25% reporting a ‘great improvement’ – only 1% reported a deterioration in their pet’s condition.
- 44% of owners administered 0-5mg of CBD in one dose, with 43% giving 5-10mg.
- 53% of respondents gave their pet CBD edibles, with 15% giving CBD tinctures and 13% using topical CBD (CBD gels can be rubbed into a cat’s ears or paws for direct absorption)

“My cat was SUPER aggressive towards certain people to the point that I did not know what I was going to do with him. I decided to try this, and safe to say he’s friendlier than he’s EVER been and I am SO relieved!! 5 stars . ”
“Our 8-yr old female cat has separation anxiety, and we tried many other things that worked for a brief time, but never lasted. Her anxiety causes her to fur maul” or lick herself until she has bald patches. She licked the hair off her stomach and around her tail, But thanks to this product she looks completely normal again! She’s also been more active and more playful. This has been a life saver for her and a relief for us!”
What to look for when choosing CBD oil for cats
The World Health Organisation has classed CBD as a ‘safe’ substance for consumption that does not cause any kind of ‘dependency’. Research has shown that cats, dogs and other mammals have the same endocannabinoid system as humans meaning that CBD should also help relieve pain, boost appetite, resolve sleep issues and reduce anxiety in cats.
According to Jerry Klein, Chief Veterinary Officer for the American Kennel Club: “CBD for pets is also used because of its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety impact, and for possible anti-cancer benefits…”
However there are two major differences between CBD oil for cats and for humans: cats cannot digest terpenes, and THC is not good for cats. Our Pure Organic CBD oil for cats has therefore had both these substances removed (read about the differences between THC and CBD here). Also many cats do not like the grassy flavour of regular CBD oil, so if you’re thinking of adding some CBD drops to your cat’s food you may need one with a flavouring. At Pure Organic CBD, our CBD oil for cats is flavoured with sustainably caught salmon.
Another issue with CBD oils for cats is that, depending on cultivation standards, they can contain heavy metals and toxins. The complications of these substances can increase for small mammals like cats. Organic labels on CBD products generally mean the resulting oils or edibles are safer for your pet – but it’s always worth checking if the CBD company has a lab report. If they do, make sure it’s not out of date. You can check out our Pure Organic CBD oil for cats lab report here for reference.
Buying a CBD oil for your cat is the simplest solution, though over at All The Best Pet Care they suggest an alternative is Coconut Oil with CBD. This versatile product can be applied inside the cat’s ears or dabbed on paws for cats to lick off. CBD infused edibles like bones or treats can also be found on the market.
CBD oils for cats have great potential to reduce your pet’s anxiety, aggression and even pain and inflammation. As always, take caution. Here’s a bullet point recap:
The Best CBD Oil for Cat Aggression (Review)
Many pet owners know how frustrating it can be when their cats get aggressive. Cats are known for being quite antisocial, and one of the reasons they may lash out is because they feel threatened or scared. Aggression in cats can lead to a number of other problems, such as not letting someone near them, biting at anyone who tries to pick them up, and even urinating outside the litter box. Fortunately, there’s something that will help these furry friends: CBD oil!
Cats Aggression Overview
Cats, like other animals, can become aggressive for various reasons. A typical example of this is when they feel threatened by another animal or want to protect their territory.
Fortunately, CBD oil will often help with these kinds of aggressive behaviors in cats. Like with people and other animals, CBD acts as a calming agent that enhances the mood of your furry friend. It doesn’t take long to notice some behavioral changes once you start using it regularly on your cat, either! This article on CBD benefits covers why this supplement may be able to help treat any kind of mental health issue.
The two main causes of feline aggression are fear and possessiveness/territoriality. Cats are more likely to get scared when you try to do something to them or when they aren’t used to being handled. In addition, some cats may also be possessive about their food bowl and litter box, so you shouldn’t try to use those without asking for permission from your cat first!
If you’re curious about CBD oil’s benefits for these kinds of behaviors in cats, then read on. This article will give a step-by-step guide that will help you understand how CBD can help ease aggression and other related problems. It’s important to note that there isn’t any scientific research available for this article because it is difficult to conduct such studies with animals. However, this article does include anecdotal evidence from people who have tried CBD oil supplements on their pets (like cats) and seen positive results.
What Are the Available Treatment Options for Cats Aggression?
As with humans and other animals, CBD is not a cure for aggression in cats. Rather, it can help lessen your pet’s symptoms so you can work on the root of the problem. A good example of this is if your cat becomes aggressive when they feel threatened or scared – CBD oil will help reduce those feelings as well as associated behaviors like hissing or puffing up fur. In short, you’ll need to continue some kind of treatment alongside using CBD oil to permanently treat aggression in cats.
In addition, there are other ways you can help calm down your furry friends during times of heightened stress. It may be a good idea to keep them separated from any triggers that make them aggressive (if possible) until you no longer see any aggressive behaviors. It’s also important to note that CBD oil may not work for every cat, so please consult your vet before trying it out on your furry friend.
Benefits of CBD Oil for Cats’ Aggression
CBD oil has a variety of benefits for both humans and pets that include:
One of the most well-known benefits of CBD oil is how it can ease inflammation in your cat’s body. This, in turn, will decrease any pain associated with their aggression as well as related symptoms like cramps or even arthritis. Since CBD oil also helps improve your cat’s moods, you may see them being less aggressive overall. In fact, many people have seen great results from using CBD oil to treat their cats’ anxiety – this behavior usually manifests by pawing at furniture or hiding under beds!
Just like any other animal, CBD oil is a natural way to help calm down your cat. Unlike medications, CBD oil products are completely natural and won’t cause any negative side effects. This means you can use them every day to help prevent aggressive behaviors from reoccurring. Some people have even been able to get their pets off of prescription medication just by using CBD oil!
Cats who suffer from anxiety will often lash out at other animals or humans in their environment. They may also hide away from the world because they’re stressed out or generally scared about something going on near or around them. By calming down your pet with a dose of CBD oil, he’ll be less likely to behave this way – especially if his anxiety stems from another animal being too close to him.
Just like any other animal, cats who suffer from chronic pain may lash out as a result of their condition. Fortunately, using CBD oil on your cat can help ease the aches and pains they experience throughout their body – especially those related to inflammation or swelling. In turn, this can help prevent aggressive behaviors, so you don’t have to worry about them harming you or another pet in the house!
List of CBD Products and Best Uses
There are many different products you can use to help ease your cat’s aggressive behavior. While not all CBD products are the same, here are some of our favorites:
CBD Oil – This product is the most concentrated form of CBD oil for cats and works well in both treats and drinking water.
CBD Tincture – This is one of the most popular ways to take CBD because it uses a dropper and lets you easily control how much your cat is getting every day.
CBD Treats – These treats come in many different flavors, so cats with picky eating habits can enjoy them as well. What’s even better is that they’re flavored like chicken or salmon – meaning your cat won’t be able to resist!
CBD Edibles – Many pet owners like this method because it’s easy to give your cat their dose every day. For example, you can mix CBD oil into their wet food or even sprinkle it over some dry kibble! The only drawback here is that your cat may not like the flavor or texture of edibles.
How to administer CBD Oil to an Aggressive Cat?
There are several ways that you can give CBD oil to your cat – each with its own benefits and drawbacks:
- Topical Application
For many pet owners, giving their pets CBD oil top is one of the easiest ways to take advantage of its health benefits. This is because it allows CBD oil to sink into their skin and fur so the nutrients can be absorbed throughout their body. The downside to this method is that there is a chance cats will try and lick off any CBD oil products you put on them – which means they won’t receive any of the benefits from your end!
If you’re uncomfortable with the thought of putting something onto your cat’s skin, then ingestion may be a better option for you. Many pet owners have been able to give their cats CBD oil by mixing it in with wet or dry food. By doing this, your furry friend has no choice but to eat the CBD oil and enjoy all of the benefits that come from taking it. However, this method is much easier for younger cats who are more likely to eat food out of a bowl – older felines may prefer having their food hand-fed to them instead!
Another way you can give your cat CBD oil products is by allowing him to inhale vaporized smoke or steam from any CBD oil products. This method works especially well with those made from plants other than hemp, as they won’t contain any THC and will be safe for pets. The downside, however, is that many pet owners don’t like the idea of smoking around their furry friend, and there’s no guarantee they’ll be OK with the smell either.
Recommended Dosage for Cats Aggression
Unfortunately, there isn’t any dosage information available for treating cats with aggression using CBD oil. This is because there haven’t been enough studies done to determine how much or how often they should take it. However, most pet owners give their cat between 0.5mg and 2mg of CBD oil every day – this can be spread out across several meals.
