black magic seeds

The foliage of these cosmos aren’t the transparent soft cloud that others are. The leaves are spearhead shaped and the flowers more stiff. I grew some in a pot and they did well despite a nasty dry, hot spell that hit my Canadian garden throughout much of the summer. I think in a border they would probably be more vigorous. But I was still pretty happy with the result. As I write this, an update in early autumn, the plant is still plugging away although the blooming has slowed. The seeds are more expensive than your average cosmos, but I think the results are worth it.

Black magic seeds

A rare, almost black coloured cosmos, with flowers scented of vanilla and chocolate.

Annual 60cm (1-5ft) tall. Spacing 35-45cm (24 in). Blooms summer through fall.

Black Magic has almost black coloured flowers, scented of vanilla and chocolate. The plant world is positively squee-ing over this plant because it is only recently that it was able to produce non-sterile seeds and therefore able to be propagated by other means than vegetatively (or by taking cuttings from a mother plant). The seeds are in short supply and therefore more expensive. Even the garden can’t escape the law of supply and demand.

From the RHS website:

“For as long as most of us have been gardening, only one form of chocolate cosmos, Cosmos atrosanguineus, has been available and that was a sterile form that never set seed and had to be propagated by cuttings or in the laboratory using tissue culture. Now, things have changed. Black Magic’ (was) developed in Germany from one single seedhead received from a private garden in New Zealand in 2005.”

Annual, although it can be treated as a perennial if the root stock is kept frost free during the winter. Zone 8-11. 60cm (2ft) tall. Spacing 35-45cm (24 in). Blooms summer through fall. They can be direct sown in soil with a light tilth and lightly covered in May. Or start indoors 6 weeks before last frost in seed trays that are at least 8cm (3in) deep. If you start them indoors, and if the weather isn’t difficult, you’ll get an earlier bloom that will last through the summer. They are, as usual, great for cutting.
